Three tiny islands off the northwest coast of Lombok. From the fast-boat pier they look identical — same sand, same turquoise, same no-cars rule. They are not identical. Pick the wrong one for your trip style and you'll either be bored senseless or unable to sleep. We've stayed on each, multiple times, so here's the honest breakdown.
·Want to party? Gili T.
·Want a honeymoon? Gili Meno.
·Want balance (chill + food + a little nightlife)? Gili Air.
·Can't decide? Gili Air. It's the safe choice for 80% of travelers.
The biggest and loudest of the three. Beach bars blasting music until 2am, a main strip called Jalan Kayangan lined with restaurants, dive shops and bars, and the best snorkeling scene thanks to the volume of operators.
Stay if: You're 22, you're traveling with college friends, you want nightlife, you're getting dive-certified.
Skip if: You want to sleep before 1am, you want a quiet read on the beach, you're on a honeymoon.
The smallest, quietest, and most romantic. Fewer than 500 permanent residents. Genuinely dark skies at night. The underwater statue park (the Nest) is just off the northwest beach and is worth the 15-minute snorkel. Accommodation skews romantic-boutique (Mahamaya, Seri Resort, Meno Dream Resort).
Stay if: You want serenity, romance, or genuine alone-with-a-book vibes.
Skip if: You need variety in restaurants (Meno has maybe 12 total) or any nightlife at all.
The middle one, literally and in every other sense. Chill but not dead. Solid café scene, a handful of sunset beach bars that have live music 3 nights a week, great food variety (Ruby's, Pachamama, Warung Sasak 2), and genuinely good snorkel spots you can reach by walking in from the beach.
Stay if: You want a balanced trip, you're a couple (not honeymooners) or a small group of friends, you like food scenes, you want optionality.
Skip if: Either extreme (full party / full silence) matters more to you.
Fast boats from Bali take 2–2.5 hours from Padang Bai or Serangan, $35–$55 depending on operator. Smaller boats (cidomo / cattle class) from Lombok's Bangsal port are cheaper but less comfortable. See our full [ferry guide](#) for operators we trust.
"Island hopping" between the three is cheap and easy. The local shuttle boat runs 2–3 times a day for IDR 35,000 ($2.25). Private charter is IDR 200,000–350,000 any time.
4 nights total:
·1 night on Gili T (dive or party, your pick)
·2 nights on Gili Air (base camp)
·1 night on Gili Meno (date night)
The crossing between Lombok and the Gilis can get rough November–February. Medicate for seasickness in advance. See our Indonesia weather guide (/articles/indonesia-weather-by-region) for timing.
·Reef-safe sunscreen (mandatory, enforced)
·Cash — ATMs are unreliable, fees brutal
·Snorkel gear (rental is $5/day but yours is nicer)
·Dramamine for the boat ride
·Insect repellent — dengue is a real risk
